U.S. Fire Administration releases volunteer emergency responder report | 06.28.2007 | 08:08:32 | Views: 6181 | ID: June 28 '07: The U.S. Fire Administration has released a report detailing recruitment of volunteer fire fighters and retaining them. The report comes during an active Western fire season which has been stretching responder and local services. In response to civilian preparedness issues, the administration also has released a preparedness set of guidelines. In the volunteer report, the administration's Acting Assistant Administrator Charlie Dickinson said, "Volunteer firefighters comprise two-thrids of the estimated 1.2 million firefighters in this country. ... Maintaining these front-line responders through retention and recruitment is paramount to America's safety and security. Communities across the nation continue to find creative ways to support and maintain these critical community first responders." Because of the intense drought many of the Western states are seeing, response services and the cost of containing fires and mitigating further wildfires can cost communities and put a strain on state and local resources. In the report, officials have said that organizations like FireCorps are helpful for citizen response because the can engage with their federal, state and local governments.
