Update: Remote disaster hubs to provide clean water and energy without infrastructure | 07.17.2007 | 09:24:23 | Views: 5760 | ID: July 17 '07: Shelter Architecture has developed a portable, energy independent, and "small scale, self contained ecosystem," called The Hub which can provide shelter to first responders and disaster victims during emergencies. According to World Changing, The Hub was designed to be a "rapidly deployable, completely off the grid, renewable source of clean water, sanitation and power." Inhabitat interviews John Dwyer, the creator of the Hub: "While our first prototype focuses on disaster response and refugee camps, we see the Clean Hub reaching all those who live without adequate supply of water, sanitation or power. ... As with the Farmer's Market in New Orleans, the home of the first prototype, we continue to see the Clean Hub as a catalyst for creating stable cultures." Dwyer, founder of Shelter Architecture told World Changing that The Hub can help with a "healthier approach to disaster response." Currently, Hubs cost about $15,000. The first prototypes were completed in May of this year. For more information about The Hub, visit here. A greater project description including photos can be seen on the Open Architecture website.
