National Traffic Incident Management Coalition urges holiday safety | 11.21.2007 | 09:05:41 | Views: 6267 | ID: November 21 '07: Officer.com reported that during the holiday season with record numbers of travelers, federal, state and local officials urge safety using the National Unified Goal for Traffic Incident Management. Use of the system will help increase public safety awareness in addition to creating a more "unified" approach to making travel more safe, officials said. Under the NUG - as the system is called - "major objectives include responder safety; safe, quick clearance (of debris and vehicles from the highway) and prompt, reliable, interoperable communications between agencies", Officer.com reported. Officials said that highway and accident safety is a cooperative effort between the public and first responders. Officer.com reported that first officials "have to get the public onboard with what's expected of them when they come across a highway incident. And, the also have to strengthen the partnerships of all those who respond to those occurrences." Mark W. Light, executive director of the International Association of Fire Chiefs said the NUG "will provide a valuable tool to help improve responder safety."
