Kentucky officials partner with local retailers for preparedness literature distro | 01.09.2008 | 08:41:45 | Views: 5562 | ID: January 9 '08: In a press release Kentucky state officials announced a public/private partnership which would join members of the retail and pharmacy industries to help promote disaster and emergency preparedness education through brochure distribution. About 250,000 brochures were sent out to families with accompanying information at the state's family preparedness website. Members of the partnership included members from the Kentucky Retail Federation like Wal-Mart, Kroger, Lowe's, Food Lion, CVS, Rite Aid and Southern States. In the months before the campaign - which began in November of 2007 - members of Kentucky's Pharmacists Association had "already distributed over 250,000 flyers" to bring the overall total to 500,000. Organizers of the campaign and the partnership said they were excited about the cooperation between industry and state and local government to engage the local communities. Jason Wetzel, the senior manager of public affairs at Wal-Mart said, "retailers have a unique opportunity and responsibility to serve their community beyond the four walls of a store. ... But through planning and partnerships - such as the one with Homeland Security and KRF - we can prepare for the unthinkable." Lowe'sLarry Stone said in the press release, "we believe community involvement extends beyond the boundaries of the traditional retail setting. Whether it's helping prepare for a catastrophe or taking an active role in programs that make our neighborhoods better places to live, we are committed to forging alliances with well-respected organizations like Kentucky Retail Federation and the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security."
