Sacramento Metro Connect to begin construction on city-wide WiFi | 02.04.2008 | 10:17:10 | Views: 5967 | ID: February 4 '08: The Sacramento Bee reported a consortium of technologies companies who have partnered with the City of Sacramento to install a wireless Internet infrastructure. Construction will begin will be done by May and includes a consortium of Azulstar (formally Ottawa Wireless), Cisco Systems, Intel and SeaKay, wireless industry publication Unstrung.com reported. According to the Bee, the $1 million project is the first phase of a larger $9 million program which will "rollout" in three stages. The first stage will be complete by the end of May this year and will cover "a chunk of the city's downtown grid bounded by the Sacramento River and 16th, H and R streets." The two other phases of the project will build wireless access to cover "46 square miles and then 48 square miles across the city over the next 20 to 24 months, starting from city-owned buildings and working outward." Unstrung.com reported, "Beyond providing wireless access to the general public, the network will also be capable of supporting a broad range of enhanced services by residential, small business enterprise, educational, public sector, not-for-profit and commercial users." Azulstar's CEO Yorke E. Rhodes III told Unstrung, "The network will enable new enhanced services and operational efficiencies, utilizing available applications and new technologies on the horizon. Azulstar's work in other geographies has shown that a multifaceted, high bandwidth network of this type will enhance community services and communications between the City and its constituents."
