Florida community employs local schools to help in emergency response exercise | 03.19.2008 | 09:02:28 | Views: 5791 | ID: March 19 '08: The Naples Daily News reported that local emergency response officials recently employed the help of local high school students at a nearby college when conducting an emergency response exercise simulating a crash. "The exercise," the Naples Daily News reported, "are also giving ... Lee County School District's three comprehensive high schools - a front row sear to the careers they've been training for in their schools' career academies." "Each student was labeled with a tag identifying their vital signs, as well as fake blood or bruises. ... In all, 58 students from the Cape Coral high school participated, including a half-dozen student media who covered the event." Other schools in the local area will participate over the course of the rest of the week. In other parts of the country, students are working with their local emergency response agencies to get training to help in the event of an emergency. In Maryland, students at Smithsburg High School trained for their CERT certification, and in California students were educated in emergency preparedness and response through the 12 Months of Preparedness program. Those participating in the exercise in Florida told the Naples Daily News they learned a lot about disaster response. One student, Elisa Eichbauer said, "I learned a lot. ... I actually thought it would be a lot faster than what they really did, but in a real situation I guess you have to go slow."
