Partnership report focuses on water infrastructure security | 04.14.2008 | 07:35:03 | Views: 6102 | ID: April 14 '08: A new report released by the American Water Works Association in partnership with DHS focuses on the best practices which will help to secure the nation's critical water infrastructure, Washington Technology reported. "The cyberthreat to water systems is growing," Washington Technology reported according to the report. "For example, in St. Louis in 2005, cyberattacks on guages at the Sauk Water Storage Dam resulted in an unauthorized release of a billion gallons of water. In Harrisburg, Pa., in 2006, a hacker planted malicious software in a filtration plant that could have affected water treatment operations." According to the report, a new need "to mitigate the risks associated with cyber systems has prompted industry and government leaders to step forward and collaborate on a unified security strategy." The report outlines a "strategic framework [which] enables industry and government to align their programs and investments, improving (industrial control systems) ICS security quickly and efficiently." The report outlines one-year, three-year and ten-year goals for infrastructure officials to work for improvements in their security operations. In partnership with the American Water Works Association, DHS' Water Sector Coordinating Council Cyber Security Working Group helped to compile the goals, framework and outline of the report.
