Truckers to Help in War on Terror | 01.27.2005 | 10:17:56 | Views: 4582 | ID: January 27 '05: Truck drivers are the life-blood of the nation and now they can also be the eyes. According to CNN, a Virginia-based trucking company is training its drivers to help in the war on terror. The all-volunteer program called "Highway Watch" was started in 1998 by the American Trucking Associations and now is funded by money from the Department of Homeland Security. A spokesman for the program told CNN "all 50 states have active programs" and that they have received about $40 million. And the President of the Tennessee Trucking Association Dave Huneryager said, "[A] Truck driver normally run the same route everyday. He is used to his surroundings ... Something may jump out at him." Truckers who volunteer sign up to undergo an hour-long training course. They are instructed to be on the look-out for suspicious activity such as a tanker which has not moved in awhile; each trucker is also given an identification number to "use when making a report to the around-the-clock operation," CNN reported. In the past, the truckers have been responsible for reporting a stolen tanker truck and "the theft of a nuclear power plant worker's truck along with the worker's identification," the news service reported. The move to enlist truck drivers to help be vigilant in the war on terror has been in conjunction with calls to mall security teams and doormen in cities to be on the lookout for suspicious activity.
