October 25 '07: For the next National League of Cities' Congress of Cities and Exposition in New Orleans, mayors, public and city officials, and other members of the private sector will look at ways to increase communities' emergency preparedness, sustainability and green power initiatives, public safety and first response a press release announced.- During the four-day conference, "New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg will discuss the role of the city leaders in shaping their communities ... [while] delegates will hear from a panel of local and national experts on strategies for rebuilding communities after a crisis," the press release read. Organizers said New Orleans was an ideal location for the conference because it helped to put a spotlight on the challenges communities face after a large crisis.
Specifically, "More than 40 workshops will be offered on a variety of issues facing cities, including climate change and sustainability, emergency preparedness, changing public finances, public safety, and transportation funding, along with several 'mobile' workshops that will take participants into New Orleans and surrounding parishes for up-close learning on disaster preparedness, recovery and social programs."
