Open Source Center to coordinate intel and information | 11.10.2005 | 09:21:27 | Views: 4949 | ID: November 10 '05: A new repository of public information will made available to intelligence agencies for analysis, research, training and IT management and in the hopes that government agencies will be able to coordinate that information to help fight the war on terror. Government Computer News reported this week that the Open Source Center will be created through the office of the Director of National Intelligence but that it will be "based at the CIA." In a statement, John Negroponte, director of national intelligence said the Open Source Center "is the centerpiece of my response to the WMD Commission's recommendations calling for the intelligence community to devote more attention and resources to exploiting openly available information," GCN reported. GCN found that Douglas Naquin, a CIA senior manager will be the director of the center while a deputy director will be named at a later date. Other positions filled have been the assistant deputy director for security by Eric Boswell, and assistant deputy and senior acquisition executive by Melvin Heritage among others. According to a CIA press release, the Open Source Center "will build on the established expertise of the CIA's Foreign Broadcast Information Service - and organization that enjoys a long history of providing the US government highly valued open source products and services." "The Center's functions," the press release wrote, "will include collection, analysis and research, training, and information technology management to facilitate government-wide access and use."
