Northcom works with private sector to boost emergency response preparedness | 12.22.2006 | 05:38:55 | Views: 6417 | ID: December 22 '06: Officials from the Northern Command told FCW.com that in order to be prepared to respond to a natural disaster, the military must adopt a "collaboration and communications" for emergency planning with the private sector and NGO's. By working with the private sector, Northcom officials said, the military and federal government will be able to supplement its response efforts with already-existing resources which can be provided by companies, service organizations and other responder-type organizations. "Including NGO's in the Northcom structure makes sense because they 'are an integral part of the civic structure and can bring a lot of local knowledge to bear,'" FCW reported according to Katrin Verclas, the executive director of the Nonprofit Technology Enterprise Network. As was the case during Hurricane Katrina, the private sector "can sometimes respond more nimbly than the federal sector can, and the government should include them in plans before a disaster and in responses after a disaster," FCW paraphrased Bernd McConnell, the director of Northcom's interagency coordination operations.
