The $4 million agreement will target the development of WiMax-WiFi capabilities. IBM's global business executive for digital communications Riz Kaliq told Telecommag that the partnership between the company and Brownsville was representative of how private sector capabilities could enhance the public sector's need. In this particular case, Telecommag reported, the partnership is beneficial for developing "the network and outsource its day-to-day operations to a more traditional wireless service provider, while using the foundation network to offset city expenses." According to Telecommag, "IBM will help Brownsville develop a network to empower city groups, including offices, utilities, ambulance, police and fire departments and help the city form a non-profit organizations to provide wireless Internet to the citizenry." The public/private partnership between IBM and Brownsville is just one example ongoing partnerships across the U.S. which use "the networks to benefit the government itself - including public saftey/first responders - and then expands into residential and commercial spaces if needed," Telecommag reported.
