Florida evacuation route gas stations to install backup generators | 05.17.2007 | 11:53:09 | Views: 7615 | ID: May 17 '07: Florida Gov. Charlie Crist said on Monday that gas stations along the state's hurricane evacuation routes must install emergency backup generators, NBC 6 and the Associated Press reported. However, Crist sent a letter to about 254 of the gas stations which have not installed the mandatory generators, the NBC affiliate reported. The St. Petersburg Times reported that state officials are also telling residents to prepare for a very active hurricane season. Already, Tropical Storm Andrea formed off the coast of Georgia three weeks early. Traditionally, hurricane season does not start until June 1. Crist said that having gas stations equipped with backup emergency generators would help evacuation and recovery efforts. The Governor also said that in many cases gas stations will have fuel in their tanks after a storm, but that without electricity, that gas will just sit in the tanks with no way of getting it out. The mandatory generator installation is very important, Crist said. "There's a lot of stations that need to get busy in a hurry to have them in place by hurricane season," NBC 6 reported. "This is the law and it will be enforced to the fullest extent of the law, including, if need be, to take them to court."
