LA poll finds almost half unwilling to obey mandatory evacuation orders during terrorist attack | 05.31.2007 | 08:56:09 | Views: 7075 | ID: May 31 '07: If a terrorist group were to strike the Los Angeles metro area, about half of the residents in the city would not follow mandatory evacuation orders issued by local officials, the Los Angeles Times reported. The findings were based on a poll conducted by the city's Department of Health Services and it was to be released on May 31. According to the LA Times, of those polled, one third said they "would want more information before they complied with government orders to relocate to a nearby school during a terrorist attack. ... Ten percent would wait until it was convenient or wouldn't follow the directive at all ... [while] people with higher incomes and more education were more likely to want more information from government officials before following emergency orders." Dr. Jonathan Fielding, LA county's public health director told the paper, "What we need to do is to make sure that we build the trust of the people." Fielding also told the Times that preparedness among neighborhoods and families was essential - but that immigrant and non-English speaking populations tended to be harder to reach in terms of emergency preparedness education. However, the poll did find that a majority of those polled said they were somewhat prepared for a major disaster, the LA Times reported.
