Florida governor opens state response center with community preparedness day | 07.31.2007 | 09:07:54 | Views: 5733 | ID: July 31 '07: In Florida, a new state response center's grand opening was coupled with calls from Governor Charles Crist to the community to be prepared for emergencies, the Insurance Journal reported. The "Get a Plan Day" program focuses on ways families can prepare for emergencies by making kits complete with water, batteries, first aid supplies and disaster planning guidelines. Crist opened the new state response center and preparedness program by shopping for disaster supplies with a family at a Lowes in Jacksonville. The Associated Press article, in the Florida Sun Sentinel reported on the specifics of the new state response center: "... a 200,000 square-foot warehouse and joint command center for disaster response, which will hold millions of dollars worth of stockpiled commodities. ... Its contents, worth an estimated $8.5 million, include: 1. 5 million gallons of water; 65,000 nonperishable meals; 45,000 tarps; 8 miles of generator cable; 6,000 special needs cots and bed kits." Florida emergency management officials and the governor are urging citizens to visit the "Get a Plan Day" website to learn more about how to prepare for disasters. In the governor's press release, Craig Fugate, the director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management said, "Floridians have a personal responsibility to prepare in every way that they can, so the state's resources can be focuses on those must vulnerable."
