Texas radio coalition pushes for unified communications system in state with federal help | 08.02.2007 | 10:07:11 | Views: 5283 | ID: August 2 '07: The Associated Press reported that federal homeland security grants have been given to the Texas Radio Coalition to help improve statewide interoperable communications. In a press release, state officials said the improved system would allow all levels of emergency management "to communicate using a unified wireless radio system during natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and other critical incidents." Taken from the press release, Pete Collins, Austin's Chief Information Officer and Chair of the Texas Radio Coalition said: To help those interoperable efforts, the federal government has said Texas "is eligible for a $65 million grant to improve its emergency radio system statewide," the AP reported. Collins told the AP that the money would be used to help boost and upgrade existing communications systems, rather than building new ones.
