California announces new emergency medical response portable shelters | 08.27.2007 | 07:17:24 | Views: 5706 | ID: August 27 '07: Environmental News Network reported that California state officials unveiled three new mobile civilian emergency medical response shelters - the largest of their kind - during a demonstration in Los Alamitos. The shelters can contain up to 200 beds along with "other new medical assets". The demonstration helped give "emergency responders [a chance] for a hands-on training and dry run with [the] new mobile hospitals. The idea is to prepare officials, police, volunteers and medical professionals for response to a major California disaster with mass casualties and injuries," ENN reported. Other shelters have been in use in the state to help medical responders prepare for field triage. The Associated Press reported that the shelters can be moved in "California Air National Guard airplanes. ... Each one can provide 23,000 square feet of hospital space and offers treatment ranging from emergency room services to surgery and intensive care." The portable hospitals were unveiled during the "Rough and Ready 2007" expo. The shelters were ordered by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
