Church of Latter Day Saints helps local disaster response | 08.28.2007 | 04:47:46 | Views: 6385 | ID: August 28 '07: Recently, when a magnitude 8.0 earthquake shook Peru, the Mormon Church mobilized disaster response resources and recovery supplies to help to affected communities. Church leaders said on their website that disaster and response efforts were helped through existing resources and congregational help. Shortly after the Pisco earthquake, Mormon responders also sent supplies to Mexico to help prepare for Hurricane Dean, as it hit the Yucatan first, then headed toward Veracruz. Dennis Lifferth the managing director of the Welfare Department at the church's headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah said on the website that the disasters show "that local Church leaders have the resources and the capability of responding to immediate needs by buying and storing emergency supplies locally." The church also provides its members with educational resources to help them prepare for disasters. Church leaders said that using technology to help predict storms and to coordinate response measures in the immediate aftermath of a disaster is vital.
