PODS offer quick disaster shelter | 12.20.2007 | 11:31:05 | Views: 7869 | ID: December 20 '07: The Associated Press reported earlier this year that the rental container company PODS has developed a PODS Rapid Response Team to help provide shipping and emergency shelter capabilities to those affected by disasters. The containers can be air conditioned and are able to "be used to transport food, water and medical supplies to impacted areas or as a storage container for household items and assets of homeowners and businesses," as well as temporary shelters, the company's website read. The AP reported in Charleston that PODS founder Pete Warhurst said that the containers can be equipped with air conditioners, beds, refrigerators, stoves, bathrooms and a generator. "They are suitable to sustain people," Warhurst said. "In about 10 minutes time, we can have a family with a place to sleep for the night." On its website, the company said the Rapid Response Teams could "respond promptly to the needs of residents, businesses and government entitites. PODS containers can also be staged in advance of a disaster to increase response times." The PODS containers are made out of steel with a water-resistant sealant. When partially filled, the containers can withstand up to 110 miles-per-hour winds. Each container costs about $10,000 to $13,000 to build. State emergency officials in Florida said though they have not bought any PODS yet, they are working to incorporate them into the state's disaster response plan.
