June 6 '07: Officials in New Orleans have announced a new community hurricane response and emergency alert system according to a press release. The program, called NOLA Ready will work to help distribute "important information about evacuation, threatening levee breaches, power outages, and communication disruptions."
The program will use "real-time situation reports, and life-saving alerts to first responders and emergency managers, and the public via email, cell phones, pagers," and smart phones.

New Orleans city officials have said that they are using the Roam Secure Alert Network, a secure messaging system that links federal, state and local governments using the Roam Secure Information Exchange that works with various media services such as cell phones and text messaging.

The city hopes to use the NOLA Ready program to alert to inform residents of impending emergencies.
