December 27 '07: The Environmental Protection Agency has announced a new website focusing on preparedness and environmental issues in collaboration with Mexico called the U.S.-Mexico Environmental Program Border 2012. The program "is a results-oriented program that takes a 'bottom-up' approach to addressing the environmental and public health needs of the border region."
Using local-level response, the program has implemented Task Forces which help "to address specific regional and community identified concerns, implement projects, and make recommendations to the Border 2012 entities." Currently, there are 4 Task Force regions - California-Baja California, Arizona-Sonora, New Mexico-Texas-Chihuahua, and Texas-Coahuila-Nuevo Leon-Tamaulipas.

For those living in the regions who are interested in participating in the new program, the site has provided a directory. An initial binational emergency response exercise and response plan was developed as early as 2005 for the Imperial County-Mexicali Emergency Response Plan.
