Local Governments for Sustainability release preparedness guide for communities regarding climate challenges

January 9 '08: A new report has been released by the Local Governments for Sustainability addressing the challenges facing communities due to the changing climate. Among the issues addressed, the ICLEI featured pandemic, drought, severe storms mitigation tactics while response, preparedness and cooperative programs were examined. More than 250 American cities, communities and towns are a part of the organization with the cooperation of almost all major American mayors.
The report was co-authored by the Climate Impacts Group at the University of Washington and King County, Washington Executive Ron Sims. The guidebook's purpose is to enable "communities to integrate climate preparedness strategies into existing hazard mitigation plans, reduce the costs associated with disaster relief, and prioritize vulnerabilities such as infrastructure, zoning and water capacity."

The report hopes to build upon the Climate Resilient Communities Program which is funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The program's five milestones for communities - initiating a climate resiliency effort; conducting a climate resiliency study; setting preparedness goals and plans; implementation of those plans; and measure those goals' progress - will help communities build strong, sustainable and more prepared communities.

The ICLEI also has said that along with the guidebook, the organization is extending its outreach potential by being "ready to assist any municipalities that want to implement the milestones, strategies and recommendations of the guidebook."

Regional solutions to preparing for changes in climate are necessary, the report said. "There is not a 'one size fits all' process" or solution.
