January 28 '08: Global Security and Engineering Solutions, a division of L3 Communications has developed a wireless communication safety system which can be installed in mines. The Deseret Morning News reported that 900 megahertz network can "provide a high level of reliable, clear and audible communication throughout all areas of a mine, even around corners deep in a mine."
Details of the Wireless Mesh Mine Communications System on the website include a "peer-to-peer mine communications system and an ultra wideband (UWB)-based, real-time Location Tracking system," which is being developed under a contract from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

"The system will also provide a real-time situational awareness capability and have the ability to integrate existing/future mine sensors," the website read. "Moreover, the Wireless Mesh system will have they inherent flexibility to integrate with existing wired mine communications systems, including Leaky Feeder and Ethernet, and is tailorable for mines of all sizes."

Similar wireless systems are in development after recent mine accidents. Currently, the wireless communication system is in the prototype test phase. L3 expects the technology to be industry-ready by 2009.
