Avaya's partnership in Miami-Dade

February 13 '08: In Miami-Dade County, Florida emergency management officials told Government Computer News back in 2004 that they were operating their response operations based on 25-year-old technology. To help the county with a more modernized telecommunications solution, Basking Ridge, New Jersey-based Avaya helped install a voice over IP community response solution.
The VoIP technology allowed police officials in Miami to set up a temporary field office during the 2003 Americas summit protests. Running 10 T1 lines and installing 200 VoIP telephones, Avaya and the Miami-Dade County police were able to coordinate in real-time. Additionally, the technology has allowed the local law enforcement to coordinate more than 1,800 employees over a 2,000 square mile area with 65 fire stations in 25 municipalities, Government Computer News reported.

Local officials said the money saved in overall operational costs helped to offset the initial investment. "The system has dramatically reduced maintenance and management costs," Government Computer News reported. "An IP phone on the network can be added, dropped or moved with a few changes at the Web management console and simply plugged in at a new location."

Before the new system was installed, Miami-Dade officials were using an "old key telephone system [that] had no central management. Buttons on each handset connected to individual outside lines."
