Social Network allows users to build customized social issues communities

June 24 '08: Wired reported on a new social network which allows users to build their own social activist network and then link it to other similar networks. The project, called Change.org was begun by two men in their late twenties, and now boasts up to 2,000 non-profit group now using it, Wired reported.

Ben Rattray, one of the founders of Change told Wired, "The idea is to translate people's interest into a social issue to action. ... There's a huge opportunity online to create niche medial portals about things not often covered in the news."

According to Wired, Change.org managing editor Joshua Levy has been "charged with hiring 15 bloggers who will be paid a monthly stipend to write about specific issues, such as homelessness, global warming, human trafficking and so on. Rattray hope to have about 50 bloggers by the end of the year."

On the website, users can search for topics such as emergency response and get the results of all social networks, how many members they have, if they have raised money for their cause, and any news applicable to that subject.
