Orlando International Airport scans irises | 05.12.2005 | 11:15:05 | Views: 4485 | ID: May 12 '05: Officials at the Orlando International Airport have begun a 90-day biometric screening program designed to scan people's irises in an effort to tighten security. Local 6 News an affiliate of the Internet Broadcasting Services company reported on Wednesday that the new program will be in addition to other security measures put into place after the attacks on 9/11. The Orlando International Airport director of security told the news agency that the security precautions "will be another layer of information that is enrolled, which will be biometric information. ... Employees irises will be enrolled for the additional layer of security." According to Government Security News the iris scans will be just another measure in a larger program that could involve "trusted traveler cards". Such cards, GSN reported, would hold a passenger's information such as iris-prints, fingerprints and other biometric information. The passenger's information would be verified by Georgia-based company ChoicePoint which has been dealing with security breaches of its databases in past months. In OIA, the traveler, or employee would be required to "stand in front of a special mirror and have both eyes scanned," Local6 News reported. Previously, the private companies involved and the OIA were awaiting an approval to go ahead with the program from the Transportation Security Administration.
