Ready Business campaign launched | 11.01.2004 | 11:34:48 | Views: 4455 | ID: November 1 '04: In a recent interview with the Associated Press Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said family, community and individual preparedness was a "civic duty" while businesses and the private sector also must prepare for large natural disasters and terrorist attacks. The Department of Homeland Security announced this week the unveiling of a new "Ready Business" campaign designed to "educate owners and managers of small to medium-sized businesses about preparing their employees, operations and assets in the event of an emergency." Secretary Chertoff said in the press release that small businesses "form the backbone of our nation's economy, and their emergency preparedness is crucial to keeping our nation secure. .... A commitment to planning today can protect a business and give it a better chance for survival in the even of a natural disaster, terrorist attack or other emergency." The effort being given to improve business preparedness comes at a time when more than 99 percent of all employers in the US and 75 percent of all new jobs added to the economy are through small and medium-sized business, DHS wrote. "By taking some steps ahead of time, many of these businesses can be better prepared to survive and recover after an emergency, thus making the nation and economy more stable." Through public service announcements and information through "print, radio and Internet PSA's," DHS hopes to "reach managers and owners of small to medium-sized businesses in a number of industries," the press release stated.
