Miami police announce new anti-terror measures | 11.29.2005 | 07:29:46 | Views: 5036 | ID: November 29 '05: Miami city police officials have announced new proposed security tactics designed to increase police presence on the streets while having an "in your face" approach to deter possible terrorist surveillance and attacks, the Associated Press reported Tuesday. Officials in the city have said there are no credible or current threats aimed at the city, but that because of continued intelligence reports always including Miami, officials were not going to take any chances. The AP reported, "The operations will keep terrorists of guard," Deputy Police Chief Frank Fernandez said during a press conference. The AP continued to paraphrase the police official: "He said al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups plot attacks by putting places under surveillance and watching for flaws and patterns in security." "This is an in-your-face type of strategy," Fernandez said during the press conference. "It's letting the terrorists know we are out there." And while the plan may look like a new law enforcement tactic, similar programs have been in place throughout the US during holidays or special events. Mary Ann Viverette, the president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police told the AP, "You want to make your presence known and that's a great way to do it. We want people to feel they can go about their normal course of business, but we want them to be aware." Some of the tactics being mulled by officials include surrounding banks and other high-security locations and requiring people in the area to show their id's. Also, "both uniformed and plainclothes police will ride buses and trains, while other will conduct longer-term surveillance operations," the AP reported.
