Operation Black Jack aimed at border violence | 01.11.2006 | 04:03:43 | Views: 4945 | ID: January 11 '06: Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced early in January changes to the Secure Border Initiative in the Department of Homeland Security. The creation of new Border Enforcement and Security Task Forces would consist of "nationally-integrated teams with federal, state and local representation specifically directed at cross-border criminal activity," a department release read. "These new task forces," Chertoff said, "will take a comprehensive approach to dismantling criminal organizations that exploit our border." Chertoff also said the task forces would be tasked with "developing priority targets, and carrying our coordinated law enforcement operations that will enhance border security." Much of the focus of the new border surveillance upgrade will include an elimination of the "supporting infrastructure" of border gangs. During recent maneuvers along the US border with Mexico in Texas, US officials working on Operation Black Jack were able to arrest more than two dozen criminals who were smuggling drugs and weapons into the US. BEST's goal, the release read, will be to "focus on every element of the enforcement process," learned by Operation Black Jack, "from interdiction to prosecution and removal," of criminals operating along the border.
