WiFi network emergence and security | 03.09.2006 | 07:23:42 | Views: 6072 | ID: March 9 '06: Government Technology News reported that a growing number of cities and municipalities are starting to incorporate wireless networks into their cities' infrastructure. Those advocating a larger wireless internet presence say greater cooperation between government bodies and the private sector will be necessary "to create the investment required not just for hundreds, but possibly even thousands of wireless community initiatives." In Houston, Texas, Mayor Bill White said during a recent conference that "local governments and the private sector need to understand each other - what their vision is, what their strategies are, what their environments are." White's comments come on the heals of several North American major city initiatives to create municipal wireless networks. So far, in the United States, San Francisco, New Orleans and Philadelphia all have projects underway. The Toronto Star reported this week that in September Toronto's downtown will be completely wireless and in the next three years, the entire city will be blanketed in a wireless network. The system will be created by installing WiFi transmitters onto "streetlight poles recently purchased from the City of Toronto for $60 million, creating a network of transmitters - a wireless mesh - that will carry broadband wireless signals into nearby homes and businesses," the Star reported. And with any new emergence, security is a main concern. The Department of Homeland Security has released guidelines which can be taken by small businesses to help with their network security. Additionally, companies like Verizon have taken efforts to help boost WiFi network security.
