Open-source information | 04.20.2006 | 08:40:41 | Views: 4981 | ID: April 20 '06: A new Congressional report released last week found that open-source information is critical in the fight against terrorism, Washington Technology reported. "While the intelligence community traditionally has relied on signals, imagery and human intelligence," Wash. Tech. reported, "there is now a growing interest in open-source intelligence (OSINT) as well as in measurement and signatures analyses intelligence (MASINT)." Open-source information is defined as any information available to the public. In the report, intelligence agencies will need to be able to breakdown "agency 'stovepipes' that keep information from consumers who legitimately need" that information. "Counterterrorism requires the close coordination of intelligence and law enforcement agencies including the Department of Homeland Security," the report read. Wash. Tech. reported that information sharing among government agencies is so important because of a rising "dependence on open sourcing [which] is partly due to a requirement for a broad range of information about many regions and subjects throughout the world, instead of the former concentration on military and political issues in a small number of countries ... The need for translation and analysis has increased as well," according to the report.
