Released report looks at urban evacuation routes | 10.12.2006 | 08:38:37 | Views: 5216 | ID: October 12 '06: USA Today reported Thursday morning that a new report just released by the American Highway Users Alliance has given most major US cities failing grades for evacuation routes and plans in the event of a large-scale disaster. Among the largest cities that failed the test were New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver and Boston. Other cities in the report that received failing grades included Miami, San Diego and Atlanta. Failure to develop effective evacuation routes, the report found would lead to heavy losses of life, or mass casualties. "The potential for terrorist attacks and last year's New Orleans flood destruction underscore the necessity for providing sufficient evacuation capacity from the nation's urban areas," the report. A chart released by the AHUA shows the best cities with evacuation routes - Kansas City, MIssouri received a "A" while other cities like Columbus, Ohio, Memphis and Pittsburgh were given "B's".
