HHS moving to develop health information-sharing network | 12.12.2006 | 06:07:06 | Views: 5380 | ID: December 12 '06: Efforts are underway to construct a Nationwide Health Information Network that would link medical officials, first responders and EMS allowing them to share multi-media information in real-time, a Health and Human Services departmental release announced. Officials hope the NHIN will become a "network of networks" to help with the flow of interoperable information and communication. Last year, the framework of the network was designed and now has to be tested. This year, "Trial implementations of the NHIN" are underway with at least four different groups working to address security and information-sharing problems. Officials hope that the construction of a network that can run efficiently will provide a "key step toward meeting the President's vision of using information technology to make patient information available to providers and consumers, regardless of geographic location." The National Coordinator for Health Information Technology Dr. Robert Kolodner said in the press release, "By bringing together significant expertise and work achieved this year by the current efforts with state and local health information exchanges, we can begin to construct the 'network of networks' that will form" the NHIN.
