Rail security on agenda for House panel | 02.02.2007 | 16:58:39 | Views: 4090 | ID: February 2 '07: House Homeland Security Chiarman Rep. Bennie Thomspon (Miss.), said in a speech during a hearing that "federalizing" mass transit rail security efforts was one of the highest priorities, Congressional Quarterly reported. Thompson also said that he wanted to bridge the gap between the federal spending "on commercial airliners and that spent per passenger on public rail and transit." "He specifically cited rail tunnels as an area of concern," CQ reported. According to Thompson, "Some tunnels that many passenger trains travel through, we have to provide some additional security. ... We'll look at Penn Station [in New York City] as one situation." In addition to rail security, Thompson said that the 2007 Homeland Security appropriations will be reconsidered so that chemical industry safety efforts could be revised. Thompson also criticized, the proposed border fence along the Mexican/U.S. border saying that the "department should have its own idea and put it our in the marketplace."
