Local PA nurse working with state officials for pandemic preparedness | 04.12.2007 | 08:22:54 | Views: 5975 | ID: April 12 '07: In East Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, the Post Gazette reported that local Quaker Valley school nurse Darcy Yeloushan has been working with here counterparts on the state level to prepare the school and the surrounding area for a flu pandemic by developing a response plan. Ms. Yeloushan's actions are "part of a statewide call for schools to work with their communities and create an effective response in the event of a flu crisis, namely avian flu," the Post Gazette reported. "East Allegheny, Quaker Valley and other local school districts are heeding the call," the paper reported. The Post Gazette said working with area schools is important because state officials have said that they will be centers for mass patient triage and housing if whole communities become sick. "School buildings also would provide a large space if the state called for a quarantine to prevent avian flu from spreading. Even school buses might be used in the event of emergency." To help coordinate efforts, Emergency Preparedness and Response Manager for Allegheny County Tom Managan said that the state and local officials will be working with school medical faculty and administrators to help create effective and coordinate response plans should a pandemic occur.
