HHS announces new plan for CBRN threat preparedness | 04.20.2007 | 07:54:42 | Views: 5842 | ID: April 20 '07: According to a press release from the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, the federal agency has released new guidelines designed to help develop and purchase "countermeasures against" chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats. The new guidelines were released under the Office of Public Health Emergency Medical Countermeasures Implementation Plan for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Threats. Specifically, the PHEMCE plan "assesses the current state of medical countermeasure preparedness" identifying the areas most needing improvement in research, development. The planned guidelines are being funded and spearheaded by the National Institutes of Health "for basic research, product development, and clinical research of CBRN countermeasures." The program will also address Project BioShield. Created in 2004 by the Bush administration, the project works to join federal agencies to help reduce the potential impact and threat coming from CBRN. Currently, the project has more than $5.6 billion in federal funding.
