Fires grow around the country | 05.11.2007 | 08:04:48 | Views: 5911 | ID: May 11 '07: Several large fires around the country are burning while firefighters and local residents work to contain the blazes, the Associated Press reported. Meanwhile, CNN has provided a national map showing the wildfires. In Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp, the two wildfires are burning caused by prolonged drought conditions. The first is about 116,480 acres while the second fire is estimated at about 68,650 acres. Local officials said that the blaze is growing and residents have been asked to evacuate. Additionally, the rain expected from Tropical Storm Andrea is only expected to drop about an inch and is not supposed to help. Meanwhile, on Catalina Island in California, residents are evacuating while firefighters work to save the town's main city Avalon. And in Minnesota, about 45 square miles of wilderness area have been burned around the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Local spokesman Bill Paxton said that the fire lines are holding but he is not sure how long they will hold.
