Radio over IP for interoperability | 07.05.2007 | 09:09:15 | Views: 5369 | ID: July 5 '07: Information Week reported that a national nonprofit emergency responder group is lobbying for radio over Internet Protocol to help with interoperable communications. The group, Comcare, "promotes emergency systems, procedures, tools, and training," Information Week wrote. RoxAnne Brown, the director of Nashville-based Emergency Communications Center told InfoWeek, "RoIP means that we no longer have to buy an expensive new radio system for every organization to get interoperability. ... We have a fast, flexible interoperability solution for all organizations involved in emergency response, separate from the critical, but more complicated and expensive, issues of delivering new radio systems to first responders." Brown said that RoIP has been able to link more than 42 federal, state, local, tribal, transit and utility agencies together without having to install new networks using the Olympic Public Safety Communications Alliance Network, also called Opscan. Brown said, "With Radio over IP, the advantage is that we can expand the types of devices we use - not just connecting public safety radios, but any device that a responder might want to use at any given location."
