IT industry told to prepare pandemic response and continuity plans | 08.01.2007 | 08:36:59 | Views: 6941 | ID: August 1 '07: A post in Computer World by IT professional Peter N. Glaskowsky outlined recent exhortations in his industry to take steps to prepare for disasters and pandemics to maintain continuity of operations. Glaskowsky cited a report released last year which called on IT pandemic preparedness plans to be in place by the last quarter of 2007. However a recent article finds little movement. Ken McGee, analyst for Gartner told computer that he is worried about the lack of movement in the IT industry to plan for a pandemic. "Most clients would not be prepared if this descended upon the world tomorrow - they just simply would not be ready. ... I think it's just part of the human condition: You don't put the stop sign up until after the traffic accident." McGee and other experts have said that pandemic/disaster/continuity of operations planning for the IT industry is vital, due in part, because many of the service provided by the industry help to facilitate basic daily functions, such as telephones, cable, the Internet, and radio. There have been some movements though. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta have been developing a "system that will enable the CDC to collect emergency room data in real time from hospitals around the country," Computer World reported. Glaskowsky said that responsibility to prepare for disasters should be a priority for all: "Hurricane Katrina showed us all that we have only ourselves to rely on in a major emergency. We're all responsible for analyzing the risks we face and developing appropriate plan. If your organization will be part of other people's disaster plan, you have a responsibility to live up to their expectations."(Click below to download file) gartnercooppandemic.pdf
