Disaster information resources for the school are bolstered through the Extension Disaster Education Network which also has been used by other community groups across the country. "To encourage familes, businesses and communities to plan for disasters and emergencies, Penn State Cooperative Extension and the national cooperative extension have joined with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Red Cross and other organizations to observe National Preparedness Month," the Penn State website read. David Filson, the emergency preparedness and response coordinator for the Penn State Cooperative Extension said that it was essential communities form response frameworks "which can often help reduce the risk of catastrophe." Filson also said that staying informed to weather and other emergencies "such as flooding or tornadoes, industrial or transportation accidents, disease outbreaks or even terrorist attacks," would help to allow for proactive responses, instead of panic, reflexive and often ineffective response measures. EDEN was designed to provide "resources on disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery that will enhance," educators' abilities to collaborate and share vital safety information through the Cooperative Extension System, the website read.
