The Red Cross has partnered with Elant Inc., a non-profit group working to help seniors, to develop the Ready When the Time Comes program for Greater New York an Elant Inc. press release read. Through the program, "Volunteers will be trained in areas such as sheltering, feeding, bulk supply distribution and mobile call center operations. ... Eland volunteers will be prepared to support all aspects of Red Cross operations, from providing direct aid to New Yorkers in times of disaster to training and community outreach." On its website, the Red Cross said the RWTC program works by partnering with local companies and organizations, training those volunteers, and having those volunteers commit "to making these employees available for service one day per year. ... When a local, large-scale disaster occurs, the Red Cross contacts their RWTC company liaisons, who then call their RWTC employee volunteers into action." RWTC volunteers then help with the organizational and management of the response operations in the area and help to coordinate when large response efforts arrive at the scene of the disaster.
