Group builds blueprint for broadband access in rural Vermont | 01.25.2008 | 08:15:05 | Views: 6461 | ID: January 25 '08: The Burlington Free Press reported a group in Eastern Vermont working to provide a template for rural communities who want to build and deliver broadband Internet access. The group, called the Eastern Central Vermont Community Fiber Network, has gathered 25 towns together in an effort to reduce costs to any one community and to provide the legal framework for delivering the infrastructure. The Free Press reported that the broadband group's chief consultant Tim Nulty said the infrastructure would rely on an "overlay" wireless network. "It's feasible when you have an infinite number of antennae sites. ... Every phone pole is an antenna site. Perfect cell phone coverage, everywhere in the system, is one of our goals. And we can do that." Currently, there are at least three other similar projects working to bring broadband Internet infrastructure to Vermont: ValleyFiber.net, the Vermont Telecommunications Authority and the Vermont Rural Broadband Project, the Free Press reported. Organizers said they hoped to have the system up and running by 2009 and would rest on a foundation of the agreement among the participating towns, the design, construction and operation of the network and the way in which the network is funded, the Free Press reported.
