U.K. firm promotes business resiliency to face challenges posed by disasters | 01.31.2008 | 09:32:31 | Views: 6989 | ID: January 31 '08 The U.K. business and technology consultancy Detica is urging businesses to "move beyond 'security' to 'resiliency'," a press release announced. The message, the company said, is that though businesses can never be completely free from threats facing continuity, they can develop ways to become "as resilient to threats as possible. The Head of Detica's Business Resiliency Services Fred Chedham said in the press release that the increasing use of the Internet, network capabilities and the expanding scope of businesses creates a greater vulnerability "to seemingly remote disruptive events." Those events, such as the recent Internet failure in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, can pose large-scale challenges to all levels of government and the private sector. CNN reported, "An official at Egypt's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said it was believed that a boat's anchor may have caused the problems," and that it may take up to a week to repair the damages. Meanwhile, the cable news channel reported, many governments in the Middle East are using their satellite backup communications networks. Financial markets in the United Arab Emirates and India have reported losses because of their reliance on the Internet. Additionally, Indian officials have said that many of the country's outsourcing centers were hurt because of their Internet-dependent operations.
