ESRI releases situational awareness report | 02.20.2008 | 10:08:41 | Views: 5659 | ID: February 20 '08: A new report has been released by ESRI which outlines the dynamics of pushing geographically-based information to a user during a crisis. Parting from the traditional pull of information, having incoming data allows "the user to make better and more informed decisions." "The systematic process of obtaining the right information," the report read, "at the right place and time is optimized by geographic information system technology." ESRI released the report because of what it saw as the need to use GIS information as an essential capability of emergency managers to "predict or model and visualize how the circumstances of a pending or evolving emergency may change over specific times," and how that information enables "emergency managers to allocate resources to priority areas before further damage or loss of life occurs." The report goes on to discuss the roles of each dynamic in an emergency - from the emergency dispatch personnel; first responders and incident command; homeland security and emergency management and the technology used - which all contribute to a greater picture of situational awareness. "GIS technology and GIS solutions are essential for enabling comprehensive situational awareness for public safety and homeland security missions," the report read in its conclusion. "Every situation occurs at a geographic location. Understanding the potential losses associated with a threat, potential incident, or unfolding incident enables authorities to be better prepared by developing response plans as well as enabling emergency responders," the report concluded.
