RX Response partnership provides medications to communities during disasters | 07.11.2008 | 07:54:00 | Views: 8903 | ID: July 11 '08: A new partnership among medical industry stakeholders, federal health agencies and nonprofit organizations have developed the Rx Response program which seeks to continue delivering medicines to patients on the regional, state and local levels during an emergency. The partnership works by partnering with biotechnology manufacturing and distribution companies as well as hospitals and community-located pharmacies to help solve supply chain problems caused by natural or man-made disasters. Organizers of the partnership say they are hoping to increase the pharmaceutical supply system resilience and to facilitate public-private sector coordination and information-sharing to ensure medicines are reaching patients. However, the group has said it is not a clearinghouse for information or a supply point for the medications. On its website, the partnership explains how the pharmaceutical supply chain works to deliver medicines. "The chief concern of RX Response is to help make sure that medicines are available to patients who need them in times of a severe public health emergency. An effective supply chain is central to that mission," the website read. Similarly, last year, (archived link) GovernmentHealthIT.com reported about a website which compiles patient prescription information to serve as a remote access point during field response. The In Case of Emergency Prescription Database or ICERx.org allows physicians, doctors, first responders and other medical officials to remotely access patient prescription information through a secure web portal. Rx Response provides fact sheets on its website to supplement its currently-published information for those wishing to know more about the program, how medicines are moved and ways to prepare for and response and recover from disasters. Currently, the group has an online information-sharing forum, a crisis management and communication plan, and working relationships with federal and state emergency management agencies.
